Cari-Ann's Blog: Social Impacts of I.T:

How the Social Impacts of I.T help Communities and Individuals

Digital Divide is a social issue which concerns the amount of information being received by those who do or do not have access via the broadband this was introduced by scholars and advocacy groups. These include different countries that are more needy by helping them to access the internet by giving them resources such as the availability and quality of connection but some of them would exploit this. There are may projects going on such as the 50x15 Initative or the one laptop per child with the Initative is is already in Brazil, China and so may other countires. Which help to learn english with something called learning labs and will help 50 per cent more world access to the internet by year 2015.

For the one laptop per child project this will help billions of children from emerging counitries more access to learning the english language and to learn about things which is classed as education.    Some disadvantages include lower performance, high price connection last is obtaining techincal assistance for when anything happens to the system and they can't work out the reason why. The compuer or network is an increasing role which is helped for learning and your career if not the digital divide would be treated unfairly for children from a poor background who will need the support.

A data protection act (DPA) is a law that is designed to protect personal data that is stored on computers or in an organised paper filing system. The data protection act as developed to give protection and lay down about how data about people can be used. The people who have their personal data stored are often called data subjects. The data protection act sets up rights for people who have data kept about them and these rights are:

· A Right of Subject Access

· A Right of Correction

· A Right to Prevent Distress

· A Right to Prevent Direct Marketing

· A Right to Prevent Automatic Decisions

· A Right of Complaint to the Information Commissioner

· A Right to Compensation.

Securing data:
there are a number of ways in which data can be secure:

They would need to be aware of the potential issues that can affect their network:

·        Viruses

·        Backups

·        Hacking

·        Malware

·        Identity theft.

Viruses: a virus is something that someone has made to damage the computer for their own use.  A virus can damage files and the computer. Organisations can prevent this by installing virus protection software and by not opening attachments to emails from unknown sources.

Backups: organisations would do a lot of backups in case their system wipes out because of viruses, backing up basically means saving your  work on an external hard drive or on your emails this is to avoid possible loss of data, and if the system does wipe out you can bring your work back again.

Hacking: hacking is an act of breaking into the computer system and this is a criminal offence. Businesses would prevent hacking by installing firewalls which creates a software barrier, preventing other network users from gaining access to data on your computer.

Malware: malware is software that is intended to damage or disable computers and computer systems. Malware includes viruses, worms and Trojans or any other software program that has been designed to cause an unsuspecting user a problem. A Trojan is an email virus that is released by an email attachment.

Identity theft: an identity theft is when someone steals your personal information electronically and they use it for committing a crime.  Passwords on computers are there to make computer security better.  However, some people use spyware to spy on passwords to make PC identity theft easier.  To guard against this, you need to install anti virus software and update it every six weeks.

What is Copyright?
This is something which is given to the original author so they can publish their work but if they never give permission to anyone else then no one has the right to publish it. But if they break this rule they could face quite amount of trouble or worse serve life imprisonment.

What is Ownership?

Ownership means you possess the rights to it and it cannot be copyrighted. Which will mean if anyone asks to use it they cannot use without your permission? But if they have you ask to use your name because you are the owner of that item.

 What is an E-Mail?

Is an electronic mail service which is a communication tool that allows you to contact people when using a computer, worldwide or even locally such as your workplace or at home in your study area. For example using something like outlook or even social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Blogger these are kind of sites to use but not always the best because you can get easily get bullied 24/7.

What is a Wiki?

Wiki is a piece of server software that is allowed to be used by different users to create a website or add, edit, modify or delete content by a way of simplified mark up language or rich text editor.       For example the website is called Wikipedia which is used to interact with the users by them typing on the site or even searching for a certain something to use for a topic or even for personal reasons. This is why it is called Wiki or Wikipedia there are many reasons why you use this because the user is then able to transfer data from one place to another with just the keyboard or their mind.

Social Impacts of I.T

How the Social Impacts of I.T help

Communities and Individuals

Digital Divide is a social issue which concerns the amount of information being received to those who have access to the internet and those who do not with things like quality of connection and related services. There are some that are quite vital to civic life which will help socities divide a single gap into two groups but can have a disadvantage of lower performance or high price connections. The problem they have right now is the developing countries because some of them steal the internet and will not give it to the more needy and use it for their own gain and selfishness.

 Potential Threats
  • Viruses - This is something that can corrupt your data files and easily damage your computer in a few seconds so just be aware when downloading anything always scan them before hand.

  • Spam- these are unwanted e-mails that have been sent to you without your permission for instance you have won the lottery come and collect your winnings never open delete straight away.
  • Phishing- Is a fake website created by professional hackers that try to persuade you to give out your personal details such as your bank details, e-mail address and passwords.

  • Hackers- Is a professional person that attemps to hack into your computer system or network also can seek a weakness for any type of reasons such as profit, challenge or money involved.

To prevent all these types of threats from damging your computer always install an anti virus software program which will help to build an encrypted file also remember to scan once a year. Because if you do not have this then you can be infected or affected by any of these and maybe have to buy a new computer which will cost you more money with this it is less cost effective.   So just think of the next time you use your computer because you never know when one of these can creep up and damage everything you have created always install anti virus software to keep your computer secure even use a firewall and spyware program. The best ones can be Norton, AVG, Malwarebytes or even Panda antivirus these such programs can help you to keep everything you download or save safe and secure without no one able to use this for themselves.
